Things to watch out for when checking out the competition.
How long have they owned their own business? Some will tell you they have been in the photography business for 5, 10 years, but owning the business and being in the business are two totally different things. Some photographers will shoot a few weddings for a company and maybe decide they want to start their own company. They may have some experience in photographing weddings, but they have no experience in actually running a photography business. Why this matters, is that you want someone with experience in running a photography business so that they don't run it out of business and leave you high and dry come wedding day with no photographer, or no money to process your order. Out of the 30 or so wedding photographers at the big bridal show, only a small handful were photography companies with over 4 or 5 years in business. So please, choose wisely where you spend your hard earned money.
Do they have a retail location, or is this something part time they operate out of their home? When looking over their website, see if they give you an actual address you can go to. Some don't and some just have P.O. boxes. Make sure you know where your money is actually going to.
Do prints come included in the albums? Some will include albums and you find out later the prints are extra.
Is their quality good? Some photographers are offering prints that are ink jet prints.
Do they work somewhere else? So many of the photographers out there are working a full time 4o + hour work week at a job and then coming home of a night and working on "their photography business". Do you want someone burning the candle at both ends, exhausted come Saturday when it's time to shoot your wedding?
Do they have backup equipment? And equally important, do they know how to use it? Just because one owns a camera, does not make one a photographer. So many churches require that no flash be used during ceremony. Make sure they have the knowledge to achieve great photographs in any lighting situation.
